This decision follows the Head of State’s participation in the commemorations of April 6, 2026, a day dedicated to the struggle of Saint Papa Simon Kimbangu. By responding favorably to the requests of the Kimbanguist Church, the President wishes to honor this important spiritual site in Kongo-Central, the cradle of the “New Jerusalem.”

Beyond the religious aspect, this initiative recognizes Nkamba as a symbol of moral resistance and the awakening of African consciousness in the face of colonial injustices.

The Objectives of the Special Status

The designation of Nkamba as a “Holy City” is not merely an honorary title; it aims to achieve concrete objectives for the national heritage:

Preservation of its sacred character: To sanctify the spiritual identity of the site.
Heritage protection: To establish a legal framework to safeguard the buildings and historical sites.
International influence: To strengthen the city’s position as a global pilgrimage center, capable of welcoming millions of faithful from around the world.
Sustainable development: To harmonize urban development with the significant flow of pilgrims.
A ministerial task force activated

To realize this vision, the President has instructed a multidisciplinary working group. Under the coordination of the Deputy Prime Minister of the Interior, the Ministries of Justice, Urban Planning, Territorial Development, and Culture are tasked with:

Defining the legal framework enabling the administrative establishment of this special status.

Develop a specific protection regime for spiritual and cultural heritage.
Propose a governance model adapted to the city’s unique characteristics.

“Through this initiative, the DRC recognizes and values ​​a major component of its spiritual and historical heritage.”

This decision demonstrates the Congolese state’s clear commitment to protecting its roots and promoting its exceptional sites, making Nkamba a pillar of the DRC’s cultural influence on a global scale.
