Kinshasa: UDPS Announces March in Support of US Sanctions Against Joseph Kabila

Kabuya

The presidential party, the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS/Tshisekedi), has announced a march scheduled for May 4, 2026, in Kinshasa. This demonstration aims to support the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration against former president Joseph Kabila, accused of being “responsible for the war and insecurity” in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to press release No. 005/UDPS/PP/SG/AKT/026, published on May 2 by the party leadership, the demonstration will take place on Monday, May 4, starting at 9:30 a.m. The starting point is in Limete, on 1st Street, with the destination being Triomphal Boulevard, opposite the People’s Palace. A delegation will then travel to the United States Embassy in Kinshasa to deliver a memorandum.

The UDPS justifies this initiative by its desire to acknowledge the “diplomatic efforts” of the Head of State, Félix Tshisekedi. According to the party, these efforts led to the American sanctions targeting Joseph Kabila, presented in the statement as being “responsible for the war and insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo” and as the leader of the AFC/M23.

The statement, signed by Augustin Kabuya, interim president of the UDPS, calls on “all its members, its allies from political parties, civil society, religious denominations, as well as students, to participate massively in this march.”
