Trappes Attack: Pengo Bossio Wangi, French MMA Hopeful Whose Congolese Roots Have Drawn Attention

Born in Poissy, in the Yvelines department, the 26-year-old fighter was killed during the shooting on October 23, 2026, in Trappes. Described by a Congolese media outlet as having parents originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), he leaves behind the memory of an ambitious athlete whose dream was to become a professional fighter.

Congolese Origins Reported by the Media

The possibility of Congolese ancestry is now supported by several media reports. The Congolese news outlet Actualité.cd describes Pengo Bossio Wangi as a young French fighter of Congolese origin, while Les Échos du Congo-Brazzaville states that his parents are originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This distinction is important: being of Congolese origin does not necessarily mean holding Congolese citizenship. The information reviewed does not establish whether he also held a DRC passport.

Born in Poissy, Pengo grew up in the Yvelines area, where he attended school, including middle school in Trappes. He later devoted himself to mixed martial arts (MMA), a discipline in which he hoped to make the transition to professional competition.

Deadly Shooting in Trappes

On Friday, October 23, 2026, a 39-year-old man opened fire from a vehicle at several locations in Trappes and La Verrière, in the Yvelines department. Pengo Bossio Wangi, aged 26, was killed. Five other people were injured, including a 12-year-old girl.

The alleged suspect was arrested in Coignières. According to media reports, investigators also discovered a suspicious device at his residence involving gas cylinders, electrical wires and a timer mechanism. France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office took over the case to investigate, among other possibilities, potential racist or religious motives.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the incident as a racist terrorist attack. However, the suspect’s exact motives and the precise circumstances surrounding each shooting remain subject to the ongoing investigation.

A Fighter Appreciated by Those Around Him

At Atch Academy, his MMA club based in Aubervilliers, Pengo was described as a smiling, respectful, generous and determined young man. He trained regularly and aspired to become a professional fighter.

His death deeply affected his teammates. The club paid tribute to his energy and his ability to encourage others, while extending its condolences to his family and loved ones.

Can the DRC Claim This Family Connection?

For the Congolese public, the case raises questions of identity and family heritage: those surrounding a young Frenchman whose parents were reportedly from the DRC.

Although Congolese media have reported his family’s origins, no sufficiently reliable information is currently available to establish the province, ethnic group or legal nationality of his parents or the victim.

Pengo Bossio Wangi’s story therefore serves as a reminder that the ties between a country and its diaspora extend beyond the nationality recorded on an official document. However, further clarification of his origins will require additional family or administrative evidence.
