The town of Nyabiondo in the Masisi territory (North Kivu) came under the occupation of M23/AFC rebels, supported by Rwanda, on Sunday, March 9.
The fall of Nyabiondo follows intense fighting between these rebels and the FARDC, who are supported by fighters from the APCLS led by Janvier Kalahiri.
Nyabiondo, the chief town of the Osso-Banyungu sector, is located approximately 110 km northwest of the city of Goma. These clashes have once again led to a massive displacement of the local population. In heavy rain, residents fled towards Kashebere.
The capture of Nyabiondo brings the M23/AFC rebels closer to the gateway to Walikale, a territory rich in minerals and home to the headquarters of the mining company Alpha Mines.
This marks the fourth consecutive day on which these rebels have been engaged in combat with the FARDC/Wazalendo in the Masisi region.
