The casualty count following Tuesday’s shipwreck on Lake Kivu (April 7, 2026) has increased. According to updated reports released this Thursday by Kalehe civil society, there are now at least two confirmed fatalities—a woman and a child—and approximately twenty people remains missing. Out of the 23 survivors rescued, ten are currently undergoing medical treatment in local facilities.
Circumstances of the Accident
The motorized pirogue, named SATELLITE KABULU 1st, was traveling from the Sakiro market on Idjwi Island toward Makengere in the Kalehe territory. Local sources attribute the disaster to overloading combined with severe weather conditions and heavy waves. The identification process is proving difficult, as the vessel was operating without an official passenger manifest.
Urgent Calls for Action
