Ituri: Thomas Lubanga’s CRP Militia Lays Down Arms

A major turning point has just been reached in the quest for stability in Ituri province. This Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Convention for the People’s Revolution (CRP), an armed group under the leadership of Thomas Lubanga, officially announced its support for the peace process initiated by the Congolese government.

An Immediate Ceasefire

The militia declared a unilateral ceasefire, effective from midnight this Friday. According to CRP officials, this decision aims to facilitate the ongoing “pre-dialogue” and demonstrate a concrete commitment to ending the suffering of the civilian population.

A Common Front for Peace
Considered one of the most influential actors in the Djugu territory, the CRP is thus joining a movement already initiated by other armed groups. This alliance is in line with the “Aru 2” agreements signed in June 2025 by:

* CODECO;

* FPIC;

* FRPI;

* Chini ya Tuna;

* Several local self-defense groups.

The hope for lasting stabilization
While this announcement brings a breath of hope to a region marked by years of cyclical violence, the challenge remains significant. For local observers, the absolute priority remains the concrete implementation of commitments made on the ground in order to restore the confidence of displaced persons and guarantee lasting security.

Context: The CRP had been singled out in recent months for serious abuses in the Djugu territory, leading to the displacement of tens of thousands of people. Its adherence to the peace process therefore represents immediate humanitarian relief for the area.
