Kinshasa Paralyzed: Ndjili River Flooding Isolates Tshangu and Ndjili Airport

Kinshasa, DRC – A portion of the Congolese capital is plunged into chaos following catastrophic flooding caused by the overflowing Ndjili River. This unprecedented flood has isolated the Tshangu and Mont Amba districts, cutting off access to Ndjili International Airport and paralyzing a vital part of the city.

Ndjili Bridge, the Breaking Point

The Ndjili Bridge, which spans the river and connects the two districts, has become a complete blockage. The raging waters have submerged roads, making all traffic impossible. Vehicles are abandoned, homes are flooded, and entire families are trapped on rooftops, desperately awaiting rescue.
The force of the current has even shifted concrete blocks from the boulevard, demonstrating the river’s devastating power. This situation has disastrous consequences for access to Ndjili Airport, a crucial point of entry and exit for the city and the country.

Critical Isolation

The isolation of the Tshangu and Mont Amba districts has major repercussions on the daily lives of residents. Travel is impossible, economic activities are paralyzed, and access to essential services is compromised.
Ndjili Airport, Kinshasa’s international gateway, is also severely affected. Travelers are stranded, flights are delayed or canceled, and airport activity is heavily disrupted.

Urgent Call for Help

Faced with this critical situation, a call for help is launched. Desperate residents are demanding a swift and effective intervention from the authorities. They are requesting emergency relief, food, clean water, and shelter for displaced persons.
The international community is also called upon to mobilize to support the DRC’s efforts and help it cope with this humanitarian disaster. The urgency is to rescue the affected populations and restore access to Ndjili Airport, a crucial issue for the city and the country.
