Horror in Gemena: 22-Year-Old Student Burned Alive in City Center

The province of South Ubangi is in a state of shock following the barbaric murder of Oscar Bendo Sambe a student at the IBUMBA Institute. The 22-year-old, a fourth-year Agriculture major, lost his life under conditions of extreme cruelty on Friday, April 17, 2026.

Account of the Tragedy

The events took place around 8:00 AM in a busy area of the city: the BEMBA concession, commonly known as “CAFÉ.”
The Assault: While walking with a friend, Oscar was intercepted by three individuals. Although his companion managed to escape, Oscar was pinned down by the attackers.

The Motive and the Act:After robbing him of a mere 25,000 Congolese francs. the criminals did not stop at theft. They doused the young man in gasoline and set him on fire using matches, an act of unspeakable violence.

A Tragic Outcome

Rushed to the Sanguma State Clinic, the student fought for several hours against severe burns. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries that evening, around 11:00 PM.

Burial and Security Concerns

On Saturday, April 18, the victim’s remains were transported to his native village, Boyambu (located approximately 146 km from Gemena), to be laid to rest.
This senseless and violent murder once again raises urgent questions regarding the growing insecurity in South Ubangi. Local authorities are now under significant pressure to identify the perpetrators and ensure the safety of citizens within the provincial capital.
