The Head of State has officially announced the granting of a special status to the city of Nkamba, which is to be elevated to the rank of a “Holy City.”
Félix Tshisekedi shared his intention during his speech this Monday, April 6, in Nkamba, Kongo Central, on the occasion of the commemoration of the National Day dedicated to the struggle of the Prophet Simon Kimbangu.
Under heavy rain, the President of the Republic entered the City of Nkamba—located approximately 170 km from Kinshasa—to celebrate the day symbolizing the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Kimbanguist Church.
A Historic Milestone
For the 2026 edition, this commemoration took on a particularly historic dimension. During the official ceremonies, the Head of State officially expressed his commitment to elevating Nkamba to the rank of “Holy City.”
“April 6 is decreed a paid public holiday in the DRC. After speaking with Papa Simon, I have made a new decision: to grant a special status to the city of Nkamba, which now becomes a holy city,” announced Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi.
Spiritual and Cultural Impact
This decision strengthens the spiritual and cultural role of this site, often referred to as “Nkamba Jerusalem,” and recognizes the major influence of Kimbanguism on the Congolese national identity.
Beyond the Kimbanguist community, this day has become a gathering point for all Congolese to:
- Value national history and the heroes who fought for independence.
- Strengthen patriotism among the younger generations.
- Promote national unity within a context of security and socio-political challenges.
By celebrating Simon Kimbangu, the DRC reaffirms its desire to reclaim its historical narrative and place the values of freedom and justice at the heart of its development.
