Brazil: Lula da Silva Wins Presidential Election Against Flavio Bolsonaro

Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won Brazil’s presidential runoff on Sunday, October 25, 2026, securing 51.76% of the vote against 48.24% for his conservative rival, Flavio Bolsonaro.

At nearly 81 years old, the left-wing leader has secured another term following a campaign marked by deep political polarization and a closely contested battle against the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

According to results from Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Lula defeated his rival by approximately 4.4 million votes. His victory comes after the first round, in which Flavio Bolsonaro had received more votes than the incumbent president.

The result keeps Brazil in the camp of center-left governments in Latin America, alongside Mexico. During his campaign, Lula emphasized the defense of national sovereignty, while his opponent advocated, among other things, a tough security policy and a business-friendly economic environment.

The campaign was also marked by tensions on social media, the spread of misinformation, and disputes over voting conditions.

Lula, who previously governed Brazil from 2003 to 2011 before returning to power in 2023, will now face the challenge of addressing the expectations of a population divided over the country’s economic and political direction. According to Radio-Canada, his new term is scheduled to begin on January 5, 2027.
