The Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) accuses SAMIDRC of actively participating in the attacks of April 11, 2025, in an official statement released on April 12, 2025. This accusation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to the AFC/M23 statement, the joint operations carried out by SAMIDRC, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), and the Wazalendo militias, pose a direct threat to the stability and security of civilian populations in Goma.
The AFC/M23 strongly condemns these actions, calling them illegal and contrary to the commitments of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). They assert that several recent attempts by the Kinshasa coalition forces to regain control of Goma have been thwarted.
Demands and Consequences
In response to these attacks, the AFC/M23 demands the immediate withdrawal of SAMIDRC troops from the region. They also request the surrender of FARDC elements stationed in the facilities of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO).
The AFC/M23 warns that they may be forced to reconsider their position to prioritize the safety of the Congolese population and the SAMIDRC elements present in the liberated territory. They reaffirm their commitment to protect and defend the civilian population, regardless of their diversity.
Situation in Goma
The situation in Goma remains tense. The toll of the April 11, 2025 attacks remains unknown, raising concerns about the extent of civilian and material losses.
Calm returned to the North Kivu capital on Saturday, April 12, after a turbulent night.
These developments have not yet elicited a response from the Congolese army. However, the CMC-FDP group, a branch of the Wazalendo, claimed responsibility for the attack.
RFI reports that the well-coordinated attack involved heavily armed and numerous assailants.
