In a context of strained diplomatic relations with Belgium, the Rwandan government has made a strong decision regarding the Belgian School of Kigali. The Minister of Education has announced that the institution will have to stop applying the Belgian education program from the start of the 2025 school year.
A decision that marks a break
This announcement, communicated via an official press release, means that the school will have to turn to an “alternative education program” for the 2025-2026 school year. This decision marks a significant break for the Belgian School of Kigali, an institution founded in 1965 and which has trained many members of the Rwandan elite, including leading political figures, entrepreneurs and academics.
Belgium’s reaction
The Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot, expressed his regret at this decision. “It is a choice that belongs to the Rwandan authorities and which we regret. Once again, political differences should not, in our opinion, have an impact on interpersonal relations between Belgians and Rwandans,” he said, emphasizing his concern for the students and teachers involved.
A context of diplomatic tensions
This decision comes at a time when relations between Rwanda and Belgium are particularly strained. The breakdown of diplomatic relations between the two countries has created a climate of tension which is now having repercussions on the education sector.
