Kinshasa is in shock. The murder of Vally Amisi, a Congolese businessman and vice-president of the Nouvelle Vie Bomoko FC football club, has shaken public opinion.
Recently awarded a major contract for the renovation of a stadium, he was killed in particularly gruesome circumstances in the heart of the Gombe district.
An Evening That Turned Tragedy
Everything changed on the evening of April 8. That day, Vally Amisi first shared a pleasant dinner with friends at a luxury hotel in the capital. The evening continued when he decided to visit an acquaintance, identified as Beni Mukena. Mukena lived in an apartment in the *La Renaissance* building, a well-known address in the city center, as it occupies the former French embassy building in the DRC, not far from the famous Memling Hotel.
According to initial findings of the investigation, it was 10:56 p.m. when the two men entered the building without arousing any suspicion. CCTV footage shows them initially heading towards the basement before returning to the apartment. It was at this point, behind closed doors, that the tragedy is believed to have occurred.
The detail that implicates the suspect
After committing the unspeakable act, the suspect reportedly attempted to erase all traces of his presence with chilling composure. He first approached the building’s security guards, demanding that the surveillance cameras be deactivated. When the guards categorically refused, Beni Mukena allegedly attempted to disable the cameras himself by obstructing them.
But a crucial detail would seal his fate. A security camera, located on another floor of the building, remained active and escaped his notice. It was this camera that captured the crucial and chilling image in the case: the suspect is filmed carrying the victim’s body into an elevator.
These damning images now constitute a key piece of evidence in the hands of investigators. While the police are continuing their investigation to establish the exact motive for this crime—the recent stadium renovation contract secured by the victim raising numerous questions—Vally Amisi’s disappearance has already left a huge void in Kinshasa’s business world and within the local football league.
